Santa Barbara, Calif. – The Marymount California University Women's Soccer Team dropped a tight match against the nationally ranked Westmont College Warriors at Thorrington Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Mariners held their own during the first half, as the score remained tied (0-0) during the break. However, during the 60th minute Warriors sophomore Katelyn Merrell slid a pass behind the MCU defense to freshman Savannah Scott, who was able to finish the chance and help Westmont take the 1-0 lead.
Marymount California upped the pressure during the remaining 30 minutes with chances created by Elise Padilla (FR/Long Beach, Calif.) and Riley Brieno (SR/Eastvale, CA). Warrior's goalkeeper Gabi Haw (5 saves) was able to keep them off the score sheet and earn the shutout.
MCU stood up to the Westmont pressure all day, continually getting forward and creating opportunities for themselves. The Mariners finished the match with 13 shots (5 on goal) to the Warriors 14 shots (4 on goal).
The Lady Mariners have played four out of their first five games on the road, with two being against nationally ranked opponents. Their next match will be September 13th at home against Shepherd University. The game will kick off at 12:00pm at El Camino College on the PE Field. To view the full schedule, please click here.
