The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that 1,658 teams have earned the distinction of Scholar-Teams for the 2016-17 academic year. Five of MCU's ten NAIA sports received the honor this year including: Men's and Women's Cross Country, Women's Soccer, Women's Golf, and Women's Track and Field.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team's grade point average includes all eligible varsity student athletes.
The women's golf program led the way for the MCU Mariners with a 3.358 team GPA. Women's soccer and women's track and field finished with a 3.15 team GPA, followed by the men's and women's cross country with 3.07 and 3.016 team GPA's.
This is the first time the Mariner Athletes have received this prestigous honor. "Our student-athletes have achieved so much in competition over the past few years," mentioned MCU Director of Athletics, Courtney Thomsen. "We are very proud see so many of our student-athletes putting in the same efforts to succeed in the classroom as well."
