Redding, Calif. -- Marymount California, the second seed in the California Pacific Conference Softball Championship, beat #3 seed Benedictine-Mesa 6-3 in the first round of the double elimination tournament.
Following a scoreless 1st inning, BenU got on the board in the second scoring one run. With bases loaded, a Morgan Brown single, but the Mariners go out of the inning only giving up one run.
MCU evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame. Mary Gonzales opened with a single and, one out later, Marissa Padilla laid down a bunt single, setting up the team's first run when Princess Nava's ground ball was misplayed into the tying run.
Gonzalez, starting in the circle for MCU, worked out of a jam in the top of the 3rd and then watched her team strike for two runs in the bottom half on Johnie Cortez's two-run shot to deep center field. Sonia Escalera, the Cal Pac Newcomer of the Year, opened the inning with a double.
BenU rallied with two outs in the fifth with back-to-back singles, but Gonzales ended the threat by getting Clinkaberry to pop out.
MCU took advantage of BenU's failed opportunity and countered with two more in the bottom of the fifth. Katelyn Morreale started a two-run rally with a long double to center, while Johnie Cortez ripped a single to left and took second when the throw went home. Nicole Barrow hit a ground ball to second, but the throw home to nail Morreale was dropped, allowing an unearned run. Gonzalez was next up and lifted a short fly into left on which Padilla made a diving catch to rob Gonzalez. Cortez was able to score on the play and move the Mariners in front 5-1.
The Mariners added some insurance in the 6th. Padilla opened the frame with a double down the left field line, moved up to third on Nava's groundout to short and came home on pinch-hitter Arianna Hernandez's fly ball to center.
The Redhawks were not done as Cal Pac Freshman of the Year from BenU, Heather O'Kelly got her third hit of the game on a chopper to short that was too tough to handle, and O'Kelly took second on an errant throw. Taylor stepped up and plated O'Kelly with a double, and Turman followed that with another run-scoring double down the left field line, chasing Gonzalez from the circle and pulling BenU to within three runs at 6-3.
MCU's Kaylee Wallingford came on to get a one-pitch out on a ground out, and then struck out pinch-hitter Vanessa Marquez to earn the save.
